Technology Philosophy
Notre Dame High School provides access to computers for student use on campus in the Huttenhoff Media Center/Library, the Computer Lab, the Yearbook Lab, classrooms and on a wireless network available throughout the campus.
Semester length classes are offered in Photoshop (DIgital Art), Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint (Computer Applications I) and in the use of a variety of digital media including Adobe Dreamweaver, Flash, Movie Maker and Audacity (Digital Media).
Notre Dame promotes ethically and socially responsible use of technology and fosters privacy and and safety for all users through its technology policy, secure network and use of internet filters.
The school's technology philosophy encompasses three principle areas of technology use: responsibility, versatility, and proficiency. Our environment encourages students to take ownership of furthering their technology learning and experiences once they graduate so that technology can be used to further their own personal goals.
Technology Department learning outcomes are based on the six standards put forth by the National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS), which can be found on the World Wide Web at http://www.iste.org.
Student Goals Based on NETS
As stated in our student handbook, our student goals for technology are:
•Demonstrate proficiency with an operating system environment and associated applications
•Choose the appropriate software programs and tools for a given task.
•Successfully find information in print and digital formats associated with a particular topic by applying the searching capabilities of a browser to access the Web.
•Design a project to research, synthesize, and present information in an organized and coherent fashion.
•Be cognizant of ethical issues, including use of e-mail as both a sender and receiver of e-mail, perform proper citation of World Wide Web resources, and select appropriate, current, and credible World Wide Web sites.
Student goals are achieved through a required computer course, Computer Applications I, and an elective course, Computer Applications II, and access to public computing facilities for both Internet access and general computing tools in the school media center.
Staff Goals
“Staff” includes every employee of the school. Goals are assumed to be appropriate to each person’s job function and not every goal in the list below will apply to every person.
•Provide access for all staff to computers and the network
•Obtain proficiency with our operating system environment and general productivity applications, including Microsoft Office and e-mail
•Obtain proficiency with Schoolmaster, our school administration software
•Successfully use the Internet and e-mail responsibly and effectively for research and communication
•Select appropriate software programs for use in subject-specific teaching and learning. Programs already in use in classrooms include Macromedia Suite in Computer Applications II, Adobe PhotoShop and InDesign in Yearbook, Microsoft Word in most subject areas for papers, and PowerPoint for presentations.
•Design lessons that integrate technology into the curriculum.
Several years ago, Notre Dame High School made a commitment to provide a modern technology environment for teaching and learning, including e-mail accounts for staff, lab computers for technology classes, and Media Center computers for research and personal productivity such as homework and assignments. We continue to support our initial investment through upgrades to our infrastructure and resources.
The mission of Notre Dame High School is to provide excellence in spiritual and educational development. One method of actualizing this mission is to provide a wide range of resources to support and enhance the learning process through technology, which has three primary components: 1) Software, 2) Hardware, and 3) Training. Notre Dame provides instructional software that enriches learning, and office software that allows staff and students to accomplish their work as efficiently as possible. We strive to support software with reliable, complementary hardware. Further, we provide ongoing staff training to ensure they can make the best use of the resources available.
